Anjengo Fort

Twenty km off Varkala, the Anjengo fort built in 1695 by the Portuguese traders is the oldest surviving European fort in the state. Built with special permission from the local queen, the fort located on a picturesque patch sandwiched by sea and backwaters was originally a warehouse. The English converted it into a fort in 18th century. Must do: Visit the tombstones earliest one dating 1704 with inscriptions, to the masonry canal built by the British to transport merchandise by boats and to the ruins
of one of the earliest factories set up by the British in 1684.
