People converge at this beach in the evenings to watch fiery sunsets. Across the road, there is a single-storey building with a high roof that houses an indoor sports centre with teakwood flooring and wooden galleries, probably the oldest in the State. Boxing championships are regularly held here. On the spacious veranda outside, a branch of the popular India Coffee House serves up traditional filter coffee and South Indian snacks. The beach plays a crucial role in the biannual Aarattu ceremony when the deity, Lord Padmanabha, is taken in a procession for a ritual bath in the sea, escorted by caparisoned elephants and horses.
